Abstract
The 2024 National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) survey highlighted an opportunity to improve interprofessional communication in the NICU, where the department scored lower (3.94) compared to similar units in Magnet hospitals (4.03). The NICU currently uses nurse-led rounds and whiteboard updates to facilitate communication, but a survey conducted by the NICU Collaborative Care Council (CCC) identified barriers to more effective communication. With 24 nurse respondents, the survey found that while most nurses (75%) feel empowered in-patient care decisions, there is room for improvement in communication, particularly between nurses and providers. Recommendations to enhance communication include increasing interdisciplinary engagement, implementing regular forums, and using virtual platforms, while also emphasizing a more inclusive approach to decision-making.
