Notes

"The importance of making the right decisions and sticking to them steadfastly was stressed last night in a sermon which the speaker, the Rev. F. Crandall Williams, rector of St. Andrews Church, South Orange, N.J., addressed particularly to nurses of the graduating class at Staten Island Hospital. Mr. Williams preached at an 8 o'clock service in Christ Church, Franklin avenue, New Brighton, the sixth annual service in honor of Florence Nightingale. The Rev. Charles W. Forster, rector of the church, officiated. Taking the text for his sermon from Ezekial 37:12, Mr. Williams, in referring to Florence Nightingale, urged the young nurses to make their work something to be always proud of. The preacher said that the nurses must rise above petty things in the daily routine of their work. To do that, he pointed out, they must train themselves early in the habit of making the right decisions quickly and without fear. Approximately 500 persons filled the church, most of them comprising members and representatives of various health and hospital units on the Island. Besides the Staten Island Hospital graduating class present, groups represented were: The Staten Island Nurses' Club; the Visiting Nurse Association; Red Cross Nursing Service; Staten Island Tuberculosis and Health Committee; the School of Nursing and Alumni Association of Staten Island Hospital; the staff of nurses of the latter institution, headed by Miss Marguerite Hunt, supervisor of nurses, and staff nurses of Sea View; Richmond Memorial, Dreyfus Foundation, and U. S. Marine Hospitals.

These nurses, members of the graduating class at Staten Island Hospital, are leading the processional from the parish hall of Christ Church, New Brighton, to the church where the sixth annual service in memory of Florence Nightingale was held.
