Abstract
In the past, anesthesiologists managed sedation for interventional radiology (IR) procedures, but the transition to nursing-administered moderate sedation has enhanced patient care quality and safety. To evaluate whether varied educational methods increase IR nurses' comfort and improve patient outcomes, an interdisciplinary departmental protocol was developed with contributions from nursing, physician, and anesthesia leadership. IR nurses received extensive training, including certification through an online module and an accompanying one-page guide on conscious sedation policies, documentation, patient safety, and medications. Regular mock codes were scheduled with the entire interdisciplinary team to practice skills. The “Conscious Sedation Clinical Skills Self Efficacy Scale,” which assesses nurses’ confidence in their abilities and team dynamics, was administered before and after educational interventions. Data from 2022 and 2023 showed a notable increase in moderate sedation cases, reflecting the successful implementation of this protocol and training initiatives.
