Abstract

To alleviate administrative burdens on nurses and unit managers, the Safety Services department initially recruited safety liaisons within hospital units to manage safety binder updates, attend rounds, and participate in safety meetings. The safety liaison also served as a point of contact for safety-related questions and incidents, as well as a conduit for disseminating safety information. However, due to the large number of units (over 70), the program shifted to a champion model to broaden participation and enhance recruitment. The goal is to increase hospital-wide involvement in safety initiatives by collaborating with nursing administration, where each unit appoints a safety champion who receives clinical ladder points. Currently, there are 30 champions, with a target of 75. Starting in January 2025, department managers will be emailed with information about the safety champion roles and responsibilities, encouraging them to select a representative for their unit. Clinical team members can reach out to their nursing education representative or unit manager to express interest, and quarterly meetings will track attendance for clinical ladder points.
