Abstract
7 Tower has experienced an increase in its CAUTI (Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection) infection rate, prompting a review of Foley catheter necessity during IDR rounds. The Night Shift Charge RN maintains a list of patients with Foley catheters, and their continued need is reassessed regularly. Foley catheters are to be removed from surgical patients on post-operative day (POD) #1, and peri-care for patients with indwelling catheters is prioritized by PCA and RN staff. To address the issue, all staff will participate in a mini skills fair focused on peri-care for patients with urinary catheters. Education materials and training devices were borrowed from Nursing Education, with CAUTI Champions and management observing staff during the training. The educational process includes teach-back methods, demonstrations, and proper documentation, with ongoing efforts to educate staff, implement practice changes, monitor outcomes, and spread the successful strategies as best practices.
