Abstract

© 2019 Elsevier Inc. This article reviews the design principles of custom total knee replacements and synthesizes the evidence in support of their use. When compared to off the shelf implants with conventional instrumentation, custom total knee replacements reproducibly improve radiographic alignment while effectively restoring knee kinematics. Custom total knee replacements are also associated with improved subjective and objective clinical outcomes. The use of custom total knee replacements has been shown to result in shorter surgical times, shorter lengths of hospitalization, improved discharge disposition to home, decreased rates of postoperative adverse events, and a reduction in overall episode of care costs.
