Abstract

To address the need for standardized expectations and resources for Labor and Delivery charge nurses, a comprehensive reference binder was developed and implemented. This binder consolidates essential policies, procedures, and charge nurse responsibilities, promoting best practice and consistent care. Using PDSA cycles and TeamSTEPPS principles, the project involved identifying primary and secondary charge nurses based on individual preference and providing staff education on binder utilization. This resulted in increased charge nurse comfort levels and improved access to essential resources. Next steps include creating standardized charge nurse training, conducting an in-service for all current charge nurses, continuing staff education, and regularly updating the binder to reflect evolving best practices and policy changes. This initiative promotes enhanced patient and staff safety, improved teamwork, and the delivery of optimal, safe patient care.
