Description

The Samuel R. Smith Infirmary was named after Dr. Samuel Russell Smith, who devoted his life to caring for the poor. Dr. William A.C. Anderson and others in the Richmond County Medical Society opened the infirmary seen here as a way to provide voluntary care to those in a growing need for “some place in which relief could be extended to the sick and destitute poor without charge” (Anderson, MD) in 1861.
