Description

With America at war, The Staten Island Hospital Board established a Defense Committee, “with the power to act, to confer with and to assist the Superintendent in activities pertinent to the defense program of the hospital.” A significant number of doctors and nurses reported for active duty to support war efforts. The draft devastated many departments, and volunteers stepped in to assist. Pictured here is an example of how the hospital remained operational during the war thanks to the volunteer nurses aides.
